Switching to Bulb with a smart meter

If you pay for your energy by Direct Debit

If you have a smart meter and you pay for your energy by Direct Debit, you can switch to Bulb.

First generation meters (SMETS1)

If your smart meters were installed before February 2019, they’re likely to be first generation (SMETS1) meters. At the moment, we’re only able to automatically read SMETS1 meters manufactured by Secure - they'll have the manufacturer’s name printed on them.

If you join Bulb with any other type of SMETS1 meter, you’ll need to submit manual meter readings for now.

We’re expecting to be able to read all first generation SMETS1 meters by the end of April 2021. So if you switch to Bulb with a SMETS1 meter that we can’t automatically read just yet, we’ll let you know as soon as we can.

Second generation meters (SMETS2)

If your smart meters were installed after February 2019 they could be 'second generation'. We’ll ask you to take an initial meter reading, and after that, we should be able to read them in the same way your current supplier can.

If you pay for your energy with top ups

If you have a smart top up (prepay) meter you can't join Bulb just yet. We're working hard to build a great smart top up experience, so you'll be able to top up your meters online or in our app.

Join our waiting list and we'll email you as soon as soon as we're ready to welcome you to Bulb.
