You smart meter data: how Bulb handles it, and who we'll share it with

We follow industry guidelines on how to handle your data, including what information we get from your smart meters, and who we share that information with.

Your rights and choices about the data you share and how we use it

Energy UK, the trade association representing the UK energy sector, has worked with its members and Citizens Advice to produce a smart meter data guide (PDF) outlining your rights and choices over the data we collect and how we use it.

The guide gives you a clear overview of what your supplier can do with your smart data and your rights as a consumer.

And if you want to change how often Bulb receives your meter readings, let us know by emailing smart@bulb.co.uk.

When we'll share your smart meter data

We will only share your smart meter data with the following organisations if necessary:

  • energy industry partners - these are the people that help us deliver energy to your home
  • market regulators - we’ll do this when we’re required to under regulations
  • law enforcement bodies - if necessary to protect against fraud or aid criminal investigations

The only data we receive from your smart meter, and the data we’ll be sharing if necessary, are your meter readings, supply numbers and meter serial number. No personal information will be shared.

If we ever need to share your data with anyone else, we’ll contact you to let you know.
