Off-peak hours for 2 rate, Economy 7 meters

If you have a 2 rate, Economy 7 electricity meter, you'll pay 2 rates for your electricity usage:

  • a higher rate during peak hours (usually daytime)
  • a lower rate during off-peak hours (usually overnight)

If you're not sure whether you're being charged 2 rates for your usage, check on page 3 of your monthly Bulb statement. Look for the heading 'About your electricity tariff'. If you can see 2 separate unit rates (one for day and one for night), you're paying 2 rates. If the statement only shows one unit rate, you're just paying one rate for your usage.

Your meter's off-peak hours

The off-peak hours for Economy 7 meters usually fall somewhere between 10pm and 8am. The actual hours vary across the country, and they depend on the type of meter you have too.

Your off-peak hours may not be in one continuous time period. And your peak and off-peak hours may also change when the clocks change (for example, your meter might switch rates an hour later during British Summer Time). Again, this depends on your meter.

If you have a smart meter

If you have a 2 rate smart meter that Bulb can read, your off-peak hours will change automatically when the clocks change:

Greenwich Mean Time British Summer Time
England and Wales 12:30am to 7:30am 1:30am to 8:30am
Scotland 11pm to 7:30am 12:00am to 8:30am

If you don't have a smart meter

Sometimes the off-peak hours are listed on or next to the meter itself.

If your meter doesn't show your off-peak hours, there are a few ways you might be able to tell when it switches between peak and off-peak times, including:

  • watching the meter's 2 readings to see when one reading stops going up, and the other reading starts going up
  • listening for a click when the meter switches (this might not always be audible)
  • if your meter is linked to your heating system, your heating may turn on when the meter switches to off-peak hours
