An export meter is a separate meter that records how much energy you export to the grid that you don’t use yourself.

Most people don’t have an export meter, as Ofgem doesn't require small generators to have them. If you’re uncertain if you have one, your installer will be able to let you know.

If you have a smart meter it might be able to record your generation export, as well as your electricity import from the grid. If it does you will be paid for exactly how much you export. See our FIT payments page for more information about how FIT payments are calculated.
