Adding discretionary or temporary credit to your top-up (prepay) meter

In some circumstances, Bulb is able to provide ‘discretionary credit’. Some companies call this 'temporary credit'. This is like a loan from Bulb to pay for an electricity or gas top up.

Find out how to top up:

Topping up electricity with a TAG Code

An 8-digit TAG code adds discretionary credit from Bulb straight to your electricity key.

If you've been given a TAG code by Bulb, the shop staff at your Paypoint or Payzone should know how to apply it. If they don’t, ask them to follow these steps:

PayPoint staff

  1. Type in the 8-digit TAG code.
  2. Select option 3.
  3. Enter the shop's unique 4-digit PIN number.
  4. Insert the customer’s electricity key.
  5. Press enter until the amount is added.

PayZone staff

  1. Insert the customer’s electricity key. If it says "invalid key", press enter.
  2. Select RTI.
  3. Enter the shop's unique 4-digit PIN number.
  4. Type in the 8-digit TAG code.

Keep a receipt for the credit once it’s successfully added to your electricity key.

You’ll need to repay the discretionary credit with future top ups. Find out about repaying debt on your electricity top-up (prepay) meter.

Top up gas with a ‘message’

If Bulb agrees to add discretionary credit to your gas meter, we’ll also tell you the Paypoint or Payzone you must visit to collect it. The credit can only be collected at that Paypoint or Payzone.

When you arrive at the shop, hand your gas card to the person behind the counter and explain there is a message to collect on the card. They should insert the card into their machine to read the message.

They may ask you to top up a maximum of £1 to receive the credit.

Keep a receipt for the credit once it’s successfully added to your gas card.
