Connecting your smart meter's In-Home Display (IHD) to Wi-Fi

When your smart meters are installed, you’ll be given an In-Home Display (IHD). This is a small, portable digital screen which shows how much energy you’re using.

We recommend keeping your IHD connected to Wi-Fi. This will make sure the software is updated automatically, which will keep your IHD working while the smart meter network is being set up across the UK.

There are different models of IHD. The quickest way to tell which one you have is by the colour of the case. It'll either be black for an IHD3 or white for an IHD6.

Connecting your black IHD3

Some early models of black IHD3 aren't able to connect to Wi-Fi. 

If your IHD3 is able to connect to Wi-Fi, it will show the following icons at the top of the screen:

  • a group of curved bars
  • a group of straight bars

These could be together, as shown in the example below, or either side of the screen. These represent the strength of your Wi-Fi signal and the strength of the signal between your IHD and your smart meter.

If your IHD3 is able to connect, these are the steps you need to take:

1) Navigate through the controls to join the network

  • Press Menu/OK to bring up the menu
  • Press the forward Arrow until you see Settings [OK]
  • Press Menu/OK to select Settings
  • Press the forward Arrow until you see Switch on Wi-Fi and press Menu/OK
  • Press the forward Arrow until you see Join Network and press Menu/OK

2) Choose how you would like to connect to Wi-Fi
There are 3 different methods. Press the forward Arrow to make your choice and Menu/OK to select it. When asked, use the arrows to enter the password for your Wi-Fi network:

  • Use the forward and back arrows to select upper case, lower case, numbers or symbols 
  • Press Menu/OK after every character
  • Press Save to save the password when you’re done

These are the options available:

  1. Scan for networks - this will scan for Wi-Fi networks available in your home, when you've made your selection, enter your password
  2. WPS Push Button - select this, then push the WPS button on the back of your router, once it's connected press OK on your IHD to complete the connection
  3. WPS PIN Entry - this will generate a code, login to your router’s admin page via your computer and enter the code to complete the connection

To disable the Wi-Fi connection for your black IHD3

  • Press Menu/OK 
  • Press the right Arrow to scroll through to Settings [OK]
  • Press Menu/OK 
  • Use the right Arrow to scroll to Switch off Wi-Fi? and press Menu/OK.

 

Connecting your white IHD6

All IHD6s are able to connect to Wi-Fi. Here's how:

1) Navigate through the controls to Wi-Fi options

  • Press the Menu icon in the bottom right corner
  • Press the right arrow until you see Settings
  • Press Settings and then Wi-Fi
  • Press the white button shape to activate the connection

2) Choose how you would like to connect to Wi-Fi
There are 4 different methods. Press:

  • Scan to scan for Wi-Fi networks available in your home - when you’ve found the
    name of the one you want, press it and enter your Wi-Fi password in the screen
    that follows
  • WPS PIN to generate a code to enter into the access point on your router
  • WPS Push to get the IHD ready, and then push the WPS button on the back of your router, once it's connected press OK on your IHD 
  • Network Name to enter the name of your Wi-Fi network straight into the IHD – you’ll
    be asked to enter your password next

When the connection is made, Connected will appear in the centre of the IHD and you’ll see the strength of the signal in the top right hand corner.

To disable the Wi-Fi connection for your white IHD6

  • Press the Menu icon in the bottom right corner
  • Press the right arrow until you see Settings
  • Press the Wi-Fi button, and you’ll see the option to Leave network as a red button at the bottom of the screen.
