Can I get a smart meter if I live in a rented property?

Yes. If you or your housemates are paying the gas and electricity bills, you can choose to have a smart meter installed, even if you rent your home. You should check your tenancy agreement first though. Sometimes these can include:

  • Restrictions on making changes to the meter
  • Information about the types of meter you’re allowed to install
  • A note about asking permission before you change the existing meter

Even if your tenancy agreement says you don’t need to ask for permission, it’s still a good idea to let the property owner or agent know before you get a smart meter installed.

If the property owner pays the gas and electricity bills as part of your rental agreement, it’s their decision on whether or not to get smart meters installed.
