How to take an export reading from a smart meter

You need to submit accurate export readings so we can calculate your export payments. We can't use estimated readings.

We'll need a reading every 3 months - we'll let you know when it's time to submit one.

Your In-Home Display (IHD) won't show your export reading. You'll need to take it from your smart meter.

Your IHD is the small, portable display you were given when your smart meter was installed. Your smart meter will be fixed to the wall, usually near your fuse box.

If the smart meter has A and B buttons 

Press the A button to get to the ‘Credit mode bal’ screen, then press and hold A for around 2 seconds. You should now see a screen showing the time.

Press the A button a few more times to go through the meter's screens until you see the ‘Total Act Export’ reading in kWh.

If your smart meter has a keypad

Press 9 on the keypad to see your reading. You'll see 'EXP kWh’ and a reading in kWh. 

If you have a 2 rate meter (including Economy 7), press 6 on the keypad until you see 'EXP kWh' and a reading in kWh.
