How to take an export reading from a smart meter

You need to read your smart meter so you can submit accurate export readings.

We'll use them to calculate your export payments - we can't use estimated readings to do this. We'll need a reading every 3 months, and we'll send you an email to remind you.

Meters come in all shapes and sizes, and show numbers in different ways. A simple rule to remember when reading your meter: we don't need any numbers in red or after a decimal place.

Find out how to take an export reading if your smart meter has:

We've listed instructions for different manufacturers. You should be able to see the manufacturer on the meter itself.

Or, find out how to read your smart meter if it's not listed here.

Your In-Home Display (IHD) won't show your export reading

An IHD is the small, portable display you were given when your smart meter was installed. This won't show your export reading. Your smart meter will be fixed to the wall, usually near your fuse box.

And you need to take the reading from your smart meter, not your generation meter.

If your smart meter has a keypad

Manufacturer: Secure

Press 9 on the keypad. You'll see 'EXP kWh’ and your reading in kWh.

If you have a 2 rate meter (including Economy 7)

Press 6 on the keypad a few times until you see 'EXP kWh' and your reading in kWh.

If the smart meter has A and B buttons

These are 2 different companies that manufacture this type of meter:

Manufacturer: Landis + Gyr

Your Landis + Gyr smart meter will have either:

  • equal sized green A and grey B buttons, to the right of the screen
  • a large green A button to the right of the screen, and a small black B button beneath the screen

If your meter has equal sized A and B buttons:

  2. Press and hold A for around 2 seconds, until the screen shows the time.
  3. Press the A button a few more times to go through the meter's screens until you see your ‘Total Act Export’ reading in kWh.

If your meter has a large green A button and a small black B button:

  2. Press the A button a few more times to go through the meter's screens until you see your ‘Total Act Export’ reading in kWh.

Manufacturer: Aclara

Manufacturer: Elster

  1. Press the middle button.
  2. Select ‘General’ by pressing the middle button again.
  3. Select ‘Total reg’ by pressing the bottom, then the middle button. You should now see a screen showing the 'Cum Imp'.
  4. Press either the top or the bottom button to access the 'Cum Exp' screen. This figure is your reading (Cumulative Export).
