If you’ve got smart meters, you can see detailed usage charts in the Bulb app. The charts help you track your energy usage and spot opportunities to save.
You’ll see the smart usage charts if your meters are:
- second generation (SMETS2) meters - if they were installed by Bulb or you got them after February 2019, they're probably SMETS2
- sending us daily or half-hourly readings - find out how to change how often your meter sends readings
If you can’t see the charts yet, try updating to the latest version of the app. If you just got a smart meter, we need at least 2 days of meter readings for them to appear.
Seeing your monthly and daily usage
Choose ‘Usage’ on the home screen in the Bulb app to see your usage charts.
Once you’re in the usage tab, you can choose between 2 different views:
To switch between views, just tap ‘Month’ or ‘Day’. You can also tap on the arrows to move from one month or day to the next.
If your meter is sending us daily or half-hourly readings, tapping ‘Month’ will show your usage for each day in your chosen billing period, as well as your monthly total.
Any usage for previous months is shown using your current tariff rate. It’s worth noting that the total cost in this view might not always match your statement. This is because statements use a combination of smart, manual and estimated readings.
Read more about how Bulb charges for energy usage.
We update our daily charts once a day, usually during the early hours of the day.
If your meter sends us half-hourly readings, tapping ‘Day’ will show you a detailed picture of your usage over the previous day.
This chart shows patterns of electricity and gas usage across a single day. The flat blue line shows times when the member wasn’t using any gas at all.
If your meter currently sends us daily readings, you’ll be prompted to change your meter reading frequency to once every half hour. This is so you can see the detailed daily usage charts.
You’ll see gaps in your usage when we haven’t received a reading
It might look something like this:
This chart is missing gas meter readings around 1pm, 5pm and 10pm. When there are missing readings, we’re also unable to show the total usage costs for that day.
Your meter will still be recording your usage and the charts will update as soon as the readings come through to us.
It’s normally just a temporary problem that gets fixed automatically. But if your charts have been missing data for more than a week, tell us there’s a problem and we’ll look into it.
Your charts include VAT and the daily standing charge
Your smart meter readings tell us how much energy you've used in kilowatt hours (kWh). We calculate the cost of your usage based on your tariff, and then add VAT and the daily standing charge.
Costs on your In-Home Display (IHD) won’t always be the same as your charts
If we installed your smart meter, your IHD will come with an option to see your ‘Usage so far this billing period’. This includes the daily standing charge, and will usually match up with the costs in the ‘Month’ view found in your charts.
Costs for gas on your IHD always include the daily standing charge, which is applied at midnight for the upcoming day. So, gas costs on your IHD will usually match up with the costs in the ‘Day’ view found in your gas usage charts.
The standing charge isn’t included automatically for electricity costs on the IHD, but our handy IHD user guide can show you how to display them.
