Replacing your meter when it comes to the end of its working life

To make sure meters are safe and recording your usage accurately, the government says they must be exchanged after a set period of time, free of charge. There’s more information about how gas and electricity meters are regulated on the government website.

We’ll offer to replace your meter when it comes to the end of its life

As your supplier, we have a legal obligation to replace your meter when it comes to the end of its working life. So we’ll send you an email or letter to arrange the replacement. The replacement is free of charge, and takes around 45 minutes to complete. You can choose an appointment time that works for you, and we’ll make sure social distancing guidelines are followed throughout.

We’ll offer to replace your meter with a smart meter

Smart meters are being installed by every energy supplier as part of a nationwide upgrade to the energy system. So when your meter comes to the end of its life, we’ll offer to upgrade it to a smart meter.

Smart meters send automatic readings, so you’ll get more accurate bills based on your usage. And we’re installing the latest generation of smart meters (SMETS2) which will stay smart, even if you switch suppliers in the future. Find out more about getting a smart meter installed

If you don’t want a smart meter, just let us know

Smart meters aren’t compulsory. If you’d prefer to replace your meter with a traditional meter, just let us know. We’ll exchange your meter for a meter with the same functionality you have now.
